Memorial Day, Fourth of July, and Labor Day

  • Refrigerated ready-to-eat foods: If not prepared and handled properly, deli-style salads (especially those containing protein, like egg, chicken, ham, and seafood) can be contaminated with listeria. This includes salads from the store as well as those that are homemade – and sandwiches made from these salads.
  • Since these types of salads are ready-to-eat and not reheated, they can pose a risk to pregnant women, and you may want to avoid them altogether. If you do choose to eat them, discard any leftovers four days after preparation.
  • Also stay away from salads (and other food) left unrefrigerated or unheated. So, for example, if you arrive at a party and there’s a potato salad that’s not on ice, or meat that’s not on a hot plate, don’t eat it unless you know for sure that it’s been out for less than two hours (one hour for refrigerator foods if it’s a very warm day, over 90 degrees).
  • Hot dogs and luncheon meats: Hot dogs are generally high in nitrates, as well as fat and sodium – but it’s safe to enjoy one now and then, provided it’s fresh off the grill or has otherwise been cooked until steaming hot (to at least 165 degrees Fahrenheit) to kill bacteria that may be present. Also be sure to handle the juice that comes from hot-dog and deli-meat packaging carefully. Don’t let it come in contact with foods that won’t be cooked, and wash your hands thoroughly after handling it.
  • Luncheon and deli meats also need to be reheated until they’re steaming hot to be safe.
  • Burgers and other grilled meat or fish: If you’re offered a burger or other grilled or barbecued meat, chicken, pork, or fish, make sure it’s cooked well-done and not pink in any areas. E. coli, salmonella and toxoplasma can lurk in undercooked meats. (Ground beef, veal, lamb and pork should be cooked to at least 160 degrees F and ground poultry to 165 degrees F. Pork roasts and chops need to reach 145 degrees F, whole poultry 180 degrees F, chicken breasts 170 degrees F, and fish 145 degrees F. Use a food thermometer to test the temperature, because the color of the food isn’t always a good indicator of doneness.)
  • Note: Because of concerns about mercury in fish, the FDA recommends limiting yourself to 12 ounces (about two servings) of fish a week and avoiding some kinds of fish altogether. For more information, see our article on eating fish safely during pregnancy.
  • Ice cream: Make sure the homemade ice cream being served isn’t made with raw eggs, which can contain salmonella. (Cooking kills the bacteria but freezing doesn’t.)
  • Ice: Use clean ice for your drinks, not the ice that’s keeping the meat cold or that others have stuck their hands into. Bacteria can thrive in a cooler full of ice.
  • Raw sprouts: Don’t garnish your burger or salad with alfalfa or other raw sprouts. They can contain E. coli or salmonella bacteria. For the same reason, make sure raw vegetables – in particular lettuce and cabbage – have been washed.

Pre and Postnatal Teacher Training at The Yoga Connection

The Tittibha Prenatal Teacher Training School, RYS is offering a Yoga Alliance approved pre and postnatal teacher training. This is currently the only Yoga Alliance approved Pre and Postnatal certification in North Carolina.

This program is designed to provide the participant with safe, informed and current methods for teaching prenatal yoga. You will leave feeling confident in your knowledge of bringing yoga as a form of health and wellness to your clients, both Pre and Postnatal.

Nancy Gilbert, E-RYT is a certified Pre and Postnatal instructor, RYPT. She brings not only her knowledge, but also integrity into her teaching. Nancy has been teaching Pre and Postnatal yoga for several years and her keen love of Prenatal yoga shines through in her kind attention towards her Mothers–to-be.

This 85-hour training in Pre and Postnatal follows the strict guidelines of Yoga Alliance. Though open to all interested, only YA certified teachers can apply for their certificate with Yoga Alliance after completion of training. Midwives and Doulas are invited to participate to deepen their practice. All participants must be currently registered within an approved organization. CEU’s are available with special arrangements prior to each weekend session.

Space is limited to 8 students to maintain an intimate and interactive experience.

It is important that we stay with the true meaning of any practice that we pursue. We are individually responsible for researching and studying, coming to our understanding of the practice. This is true with any group that we associate with. In my religion I have studied several different denominations, I discovered that they all have their own spin on beliefs, books, life styles, traditions, and laws. I choose to remain plain ole Christian. I attend a variety of different services, I still am discovering my path and I remain faithful to my roots in Christianity.

When we choose a style of yoga, we are responsible to research it’s history. What’s the foundation built on? If you choose a type of yoga named after it’s founder, what were the founder’s motives? What was wrong in the founders opinion with the traditional style of yoga? Is it the ego that is leading the program? or is it a true deep appreciation of the nature of yoga that is leading the founder? Most of the time the schools are so big that you will never be able to ask these questions of the teacher. Does this type of school or style of yoga lead to a break down of a tradition that is older and more deeply rooted than these schools? Have we lost touch of what yoga is about?

Several types of media are revealing a nasty side of yoga. That’s great because it should keep us in check with our true intentions when we practice yoga. We all need to stop and evaluate our practice, be true to the traditions, styles and it’s beautiful history. Other wise we have taken a practice and put our western spin, demoralized the traditions, and spit it out making it Americanized. Yoga is not mine or yours to manipulate into your own ego fed style.
